Mississauga & Peel False Alarm By-Laws

In September 1996, the city of Mississauga enacted a by-law allowing for fines for certain false fire alarms.  The intent of recovering the cost of servicing false fire alarms is:

  • To encourage property owners to take steps to ensure the security and correct operation of their fire alarm panels, pumps, detectors and pull stations;
  • To ensure the City taxpayers do not subsidize false fire alarm responses;
  • Ultimately to reduce all types of false fire alarms.

The $600 recovery is based on the price of two fire trucks and their firefighting staff.  For questions about false alarm cost recovery fees and this by-law please call
(905) 615-3777.

Fine Structure:
For responding to nuisance false alarms and alarms occurring as a result of a malicious act:

  • For properties where monitoring is not augmented by a direct electronic data connection to the fire department, first false alarm in any calendar year is free.

  • For properties where monitoring is augmented by a direct electronic data connection to the fire department, first 4 false alarms in any calendar year are free.

  • Each subsequent false alarm in any calendar year costs $600.00

For responding to false alarms occurring as a result of work being performed on a fire alarm system or emergency system:

  • For properties where monitoring is not augmented by a direct electronic data connection to the fire department, each false alarm costs $600.00

  • Properties where monitoring is augmented by a direct electronic data connection to the fire department, first 2 false alarms in any calendar year are free.

  • Each subsequent false alarm in any calendar year costs $600.00

  • $300.00 for the first hour or any part thereof.

  • $120.00 for each additional one-half hour or part thereof.

Peel Regional Police False Alarm Reduction Policy

 First False Alarm:      False Alarm Notice issued by the Alarm Program Office served to the alarm owner by regular mail.  This notice informs the alarm owner of one (1) false alarm and to take remedial action in order to avoid future loss of police response to alarm calls.  An information sheet will be included with the notice outlining the alarm policy.

Second False Alarm:  Suspension Notice issued by the Alarm Program Coordinator and personally served to the alarm owner by P.R.P. Process Server.  This Suspension Notice informs the alarm owner of two (2) false alarms within a one year period from the date of the first false alarm.  Police alarm response will be suspended for a one (1) year period effective five (5) clear business days from the service date of the Suspension Notice.

Reinstatement:          Police response to alarm calls may be re-instated at the discretion of the Alarm Program Coordinator, upon receipt of documentation from the alarm subscriber, alarm company or monitoring station informing this service that all problems have been rectified.  Two (2) further false alarms within the one (1) year period from the date of suspension will result in the confirmation of the original suspension.

It is believed that this information was accurate as of October 3rd, 2002. Please contact the Police or Fire department directly to confirm.
