VoIP SERVICES
In recent years, an alternative to the use of standard wire line telephone services has emerged. This new competitor to the traditional service goes by the acronym VoIP ( Voice over Internet Protocol) which utilizes the internet as the carrier for the telephone service. There are some great benefits to clients who utilize VoIP. As a digital service, VoIP data is able to integrate with other digital data on a business or home network, providing many enhanced services to clients. And often, since clients are already paying for an internet connection, it is more affordable to bundle a VoIP on top of the basic service, than to pay for a wire line connection.
Along with the benefits of VoIP comes a major problem. As a digital device, a VoIP telephone can be a portable device. In many cases, VoIP can be accessed via a portable computer, or a VoIP telephone that can operated plugged into any digital internet connection. This could be at a users home, office or hotel room in another city. While this is a great benefit for the VoIP user, it causes a huge concern for provision of 911 services. When the user calls 911 on their VoIP phone, where exactly are they located? In a wireline 911 situation , the ANI/ALI information that identifies location is passed to the 911 operator and then relayed to the emergency service provider. But for VoIP calls, the location information on record, may or may not be accurate for a particular call.
For this reason the Canadian government (CRTC) has mandated that 911 calls originating from VoIP users must have their location verified by an certified emergency services operator. For VoIP calls the operator must verify the physical location of the caller prior to dispatching the appropriate emergency service provider. While this takes a little longer, it is the only way today to be absolutely certain of where the caller is located in a VoIP situation.
This is where Northern911 comes in. Our Emergency Response Center (ERC) and its call takers are certified to operate as a third party VoIP emergency services provider. The ERC meets and exceeds all standards mandated by both the Canadian and United States governments. Our highly trained operators are skilled at downloading the initial location information from our client VoIP providers, then verifying or changing it during the process of taking an emergency services V911 call. In Canada, we were the first third party organization to provide this service, and Northern911 management worked closely with the CRTC to define the requirements and standards that third party providers would be subjected to.
